New UK Lib Dem leader Dick Clegg MP carried out a re-shuffle on the 20 th December 2007. Michael Moore was demoted from Foreign & Commonwealth Affairs spokesman to International Development spokesman, while Danny Alexander and Alistair Carmichael were kept on as spokesmen for Work & Pensions and Northern Ireland & Scotland respectively. On the 7 th January 2007, Sir Robert Smith was appointed Lib Dem Shadow Deputy Leader of the House of Commons, while Alan Reid became Deputy Spokesman on Scotland as well as Northern Ireland, Jo Swinson was transferred from Deputy Spokeswoman on Women & Equalities to Foreign & Commonwealth Affairs and John Barrett was transferred from Deputy Spoksman on International Development to Work &, Pensions. Willie Rennie became a Lib Dem whip in addition to being Deputy Defence spokesman.
On the 5 th March 2008, Alastair Carmichael resigned as Scottish spokesman and the portfolio was given to Michael Moore.
