Scottish Representative Peers

List compiled by Leigh Rayment

As part of the Scottish Union with England Act of 1707 and the Union with Scotland Act of 1707, sixteen representative peers of Scotland were elected for the duration of each parliament. Where necessary, by-elections were held to fill vacancies when they occurred.

The representative system ceased on the passing of the Peerage Act 1963 which gave to all peers of Scotland unrestricted right of membership of the House of Lords.

After each name listed below is a date, which shows the date that peer ceased to be a representative peer. Readers should therefore assume that the respective peer was elected for all parliaments between the date of his initial election and the final date shown.
