saltire shield'Obviously the Scotland Office has no real function apart from using up money on needless bureaucracy, so quite clearly it should be abolished. I think the devolved parliament should develop its own relationships with Whitehall departments. There is an idea for my compatriot Gordon Brown in order to save some money and not have so many people squeezing around the cabinet table.'

By-election for the Glasgow East constituency in the Westminster Parliament following the resignation of Labour MP David Marshall.

26 th August 2008

The new Scottish Liberal Democrat leader will be announced.

May - June 2009

Possible date for next Westminster election. 59 MPs will be elected by the First Past the Post system. Wendy Alexander has suggested that the election will not be held until May - June 2010.

11 th June 2009

Seventh direct elections to the European parliament. In Scotland seven MEPs will be elected by the D'Hondt system of PR from national lists. A total of 736 MEPs will be elected in 27 member states.

May 2011

Fourth elections to the devolved Scottish parliament. New constituency boundaries will be used for these elections.

June 2014

Eighth direct elections to the European parliament. Seven MEPs will be elected by the D'Hondt system of PR from national lists.

May 2015

Fifth elections to the devolved Scottish parliament.
