Salmond tipped as voting closes

From the Glasgow Evening Times, 31 st August 2004

VOTING in the SNP leadership election closed at noon today with former leader Alex Salmond still hot favourite to take over the role once more.

Insiders at SNP headquarters were predicting that by the close of the poll around three- quarters of the 8209 fully paid-up party members would have voted.

Their expectation was based on last Friday's figure when 64% had already returned their vote and today's total would include votes from Saturday and yesterday.

Although front runner, Mr Salmond - who is based in Westminster and not Holyrood - insisted he was taking nothing for granted and said he would be working up to the last minute to collect votes to ensure victory.

The result of the election will be announced on Friday.
