Ballot papers are being posted to the
8,000 members who will pick the next
leader of the Scottish National Party.
They will choose between Roseanna Cunningham,
Mike Russell and a former leader, Alex Salmond.
Activists will also pick a new deputy from Nicola
Sturgeon, Christine Grahame and Fergus Ewing.
Ballot papers have to be returned by 31 August. The
result of the contest to replace John Swinney is due
to be declared on 3 September.
It is the first time the SNP leader has been chosen by
one member one vote.
Party members will rank the three contenders for leader in order.
Party surprised
The vote for deputy leader is an entirely separate ballot. Second preferences could make the difference if
no clear winner emerges from the first count.
The favourite to succeed Mr Swinney is his predecessor, Mr Salmond.
The MP for Banff and Buchan hopes he would be joined by Ms Sturgeon as deputy.
One of Mr Salmond's former arch-rivals surprised the party by publicly backing his bid to become
leader earlier this week.
Alex Neil said Mr Salmond was someone who could unite the party - although he is not backing his
running mate, Ms Sturgeon.
