Veteran Nationalist Kenny MacAskill is to fight Fergus Ewing for the deputy leadership of the SNP.
The Lothians MSP said he had been urged to stand for the top job, but instead decided to support Nicola Sturgeon for that post.
The former left-winger turned moderate said he had the necessary skills and commitment the party needs.
Kenny MacAskill MSP said: "I think it's important that we make a generational change. I think the party does need to move forward, we have stumbled somewhat but I think we need to address it and I think we have an opportunity to revitalise, re-energise and go forward under Nicola."
