Labour's new finance (etc) spokesperson, Wendy Alexander, didn't do much to further her ambition to replace Jack McConnell as leader with her first front-bench outing last week. Her speech comparing the SNP's John Swinney to the eponymous caterpillar in the children's story - on the grounds that he is gobbling up Cabinet portfolios - was an embarrassing mess. Was this the finest intellect in the Labour firmament?'
