saltire shield'A Liberal Democrat deputy first minister could have been sitting next to Alex Salmond - a figure able to curb the wilder excesses of confrontational Nationalism. Other LibDem ministers could have been in there too, ensuring continuity with previous administrations and guaranteeing that the SNP stuck to socially liberal policies rather than national posturing. But the Liberal Democrats have decided to give up any restraining influence and to sit on the sidelines, leaving Salmond with a clear run at government and a £30 billion war chest to promote Scottish independence. That possible Liberal Democrat seat in a future Labour Westminster Cabinet, hinted at by Gordon Brown on Friday, has been bought at a high cost.'
