Claudia Beamish is the daughter of the late Lord Chelwood, former Tory MP Sir Tufton Beamish who represented Lewes in Sussex in the 1940s and 1950s. She works as a supply teacher. She contested the South of Scotland list for Labour in second and fist place in 1999 and 2003 respectively, but was not elected. In 2000 she was on the short list for Labour in the ill fated Ayr by-election where Cllr Rita Miller lost the seat to the Tories and was pushed into third place by the SNP. She is a member of the Scottish Labour Party Executive.

Jalal Chaudry is a transport engineer and a Musselburgh community councillor. He is the Edinburgh and East of Scotland representative on the Muslim Council of Britain, chairman of the Islamic Society of Scotland, and was recently elected to the National Executive Committee of the Scottish Labour Party. He stood at a by-election for the East Lothian ward of Musselburgh East in June 2000 but lost the ward to the SNP's Roger Knox with a 13 % swing. He had hoped to become Labour candidate for Edinburgh East & Musselburgh but failed to be selected for the short list of four.

The conclusion of her part-time study at Glasgow University was Membership of the Chartered Institute of Housing. She is currently employed as a Senior Housing Officer with Scottish Homes in Kilmarnock. She lives in Irvine with her husband and grown up son and daughter. She is a member of Unison.
