| Matthew Desmond was born in Stirling, following a brief spell in the agriculture industry I followed my father into the distilling industry spending fifteen years at Cambus Distillery before moving north to Mortlach Distillery Speyside in 1993. In 2001 he graduated as a mature student from Aberdeen University with a BSc in Rural Development and have recently completed a Post Graduate Diploma in "Environmental Decision Making" with the Open University. He joined UKIP in 2004 and was successful in being selected as the UKIPScotland candidate for Stirling in the 2005 Westminster Parliamentary Election. He says "Although I failed to be elected the Party's share of the vote within the constituency was increased by 25%. During the 2005 elections campaign the Conservative & Unionist Party and the Scottish National Party promised the undeliverable. For example both parties said they would take Scotland out of the Common Fishing Policy. I believe this pledge (and many others) was a deliberate attempt to mislead the electorate since, at that time; a commitment had already been made to the C.F.P. I believe that UKIPScotland is the only alternative to protect and further Scotland's interests." Recent electoral experience As a UKIP candidate: 2005 Westminster election, Stirling, 209 votes (0.48 %) As an Independent: November 2004 Moray Council by election, Speyside, 99 votes (9.72 %) August 2004 Moray Council by election, Speyside, 91 votes (9.80 %) | ||
