Ian Borthwick 1. Cllr Ian Borthwick SSCUP
Scottish Senior Citizens Unity Party
Iain Borthwick is a veteran independent Labour Cllr and a former leader of Dundee Council. In 2003 he contested Dundee West as an Independent, coming third with almost 19 % of the vote. He was an officer of Age Concern Scotland for 30 years and has a closeunderstanding of issues affecting older people and has campaigned for and promoted the rights of older people. He is married and has a grown up family. As an Independent Councillor on Dundee City Council he has long experience in local government and, in addition, was a member of Health Authorities in Tayside for 15 years. He has also gained extensive experience as a Magistrate in Dundee. "It is vital that we strive to make the lives of older people more secure, comfortable, dignified and enjoyable.Poor health and poverty damage the lives of too many older people. Many cannot afford to adequately heat their homes and hundreds end up in hospital every year suffering from cold related illnesses. Fuel poverty is an affront to society and we must end this scandal. About half the state pension is needed to cover things like council tax, fuel bills and water charges before you even start to live. The cost of living is soaring for the over 75's. Our aging population faces important questions which matter to today's pensioners just as much as they matter to tomorrows. We must work harder to end the scandal of older people living in poverty, poor housing and poor health. Older people must be fully included in society, free from prejudice and abuse. Today's pensioners have contributed throughout their lives to the health, wealth andsecurity of our country and the security and success of our communities and families. But they are not sharing fairly in the growing prosperity of the nation. Half of all pensioners live on an income that is inadequate. The challenge for society and any Government is to ensure an adequate income for all pensioners to enable them to lead a full and fulfilling life.Ê The world we know today is one we have built from past choices, and so the choices we make today will create the world we live in tomorrow. I am determined to campaign on two core areas. Firstly - the need to abolish poverty for Scottish pensioners and secondly - the promotion of the interests of ordinary working people against divisive, sectional agendas. We have a simple message. abolish pensioner poverty by increasing the basic pension to at least £160 per week; end the meanness of means testing of older people; and replace the council tax with a fair, local income tax."
