saltire shield 'Among the MSP turncoats one name stands out. Andrew Arbuckle is a member of the joint bridge board. He has long been a staunch advocate of a toll-free road system. Fifteen months ago, Mr Arbuckle objected to tolls on the Tay rising. This is what he said: 'Twenty-five per cent of tolls collected go to pay staff wages, with a further 30% going to cover finance charges. 'I was looking forward to a time when the bridge would be toll-free as part of the national road network, but as things stand, motorists are getting fleeced.' But yesterday it was the voters who indirectly sent Mr Arbuckle to Holyrood who were fleeced. They may have thought he said what he meant and meant what he said. But the truth is he failed to vote against the very tolls he has so long castigated.'

Andrew Arbuckle was born on the 12 of April 1944 in Fife and was educated at Bell Baxter High School in Cupar and Elmwood College in Cupar where he obtained a National Diploma in Agriculture. He farmed at Newburgh in East Fife and is a former President of Fife NFU. From 1986 until 2005, he was Agricultural Editor for the Dundee Courier & Advertiser. He has been a Fife councillor since 1986 and is still the Cllr for Newburgh & Tay Coast. Andrew Arbuckle became an MSP for Mid Scotland & Fife in 2005 after the ex Tory MP Dr Keith Raffan stood down because of "ill health" after an investigation into his expenses. He was the the first MSP to be 'sworn in' in at the new parliament building (aka "Donald's Dome") in January 2005. Arbuckle's failure to win first place on the list will be a disappointment to him, but is not unexpected following the outrage when he voted to keep tolls on the Tay Bridge after having proclaimed that he advocated a toll-free road system. Unless the Lib Dem vote increases significently, the "Great Betrayer" as he is known locally, risks losing his seat in 2007.
