![]() | 'In an ill-fated attempt to describe his opponent's stance, the first minister said, mysteriously: 'I can't use the word that at Westminster would be unparliamentary - but it begins with an 'h' and ends with a 'y'.' What could the word be that dare not speak its name - heresy, harlotry, hospitality? A ripple went round the ranks of MSPs, made flesh for the Nats by Margaret Ewing as she shouted out a devastating answer: 'Henry!' Cue collapse of parliamentarians.' Dominique Rommel (Also number 3 on Highlands & Islands list) |
![]() |
| Liberal Democrat | ||
| Dominique Rommel has been chosen as candidate for Moray in place of the disgraced veteran candidate, Cllr Linda Gorn whose campaign team in the 2006 by-election was accused of behaving like 'snake-oil salesmen' when they attempted to mislead the voters by making selective quotes from the Northern Scot newspaper. The paper's editor, Pauline Taylor said: 'I have never known anything like it. It is just appalling that they are doing this.' The newspaper made a complaint to the Electoral Commission. On the 12 th April 2006 the Liberals published a poll suggesting they would come second with 32.0 % of the vote in Moray, but when the votes were counted they were in third place behind the Tories with just 19.37 %. Dominique Rommel is 48 years old, single, and has lived in Scalloway in the Shetland Islands since 1993. She works as the managing director of consultancy Pharos Atlantic Ltd. Ms Rommel is a qualified workboat skipper and commercial yachtmaster and is a member of Shetland Health Board, Shetland Development Trust, Shetland Transport Partnership and Scalloway Community Council. Before she came to Shetland she was a court lawyer and then a banker in Brussels. Recent electoral experience | ||

Mary Scanlon (Also number 1 on Highlands & Islands list) |
![]() |
| Conservative & Unionist | ||
| Ms Scanlon, who is now known in Moray by her full name, "Mary Scanlon is a Tory!", was born in Dundee on the 25 th May 1947 and educated at Craigo Secondary School in Montrose and Dundee University where she graduated with an MA in Economics and Politics and a Diploma in Personnel Management. She worked as a Civil servant and for British Telecom before becoming a Lecturer in Economics and Management at Perth College from 1983 - 1988, and later at Dundee Institute of Technology from 1988 - 1994 become lecturing in Economics/Business administration at Inverness College of the University of the Highlands & Islands. In 1999 and 2003 she was second on the Tory Highlands & Islands list. In 1999 she was elected as the region's fifth MSP and in 2003 as the region's fourth MSP. Scanlon is divorced and is a member of the Institute of Personnel Development. In the Scottish Parliament, she voted in favour of the invasion of Iraq. Mary Scanlon was Tory Spokesperson on Communities and was Convenor of the Cross-Party Groups on Fertility Services, Funerals & Bereavement. She resigned her Highlands & list seat on 7 th April 2006, hoping to win Moray. Scanlon claimed to be Margaret Ewing's natural heir but her by-election leaflets failed to mention that she was a member of the Tory party. Her by-election team was reported to Grampian Police for falsifying two supposedly handwritten letters of support from local independent councillors. Scalon failed to win Moray and only managed to increase the Tory vote by 0.36 %. However, she had the satisfaction of staying ahead of the Liberals, who had published polling figures which suggested they could win the seat, but were caught out attempting to mislead the public.
