Candidates and Constituency Assessments

saltire shield'Since our last discussion, I have received additional information about the circumstances which led to my exclusion from the Labour Party's list of approved candidates for last year's election to the Scottish Parliament. As a result I have no confidence in the present leadership of the Labour Party and I therefore no longer wish to pursue my application to rejoin the Party. I now intend giving up my membership of the House of Commons, as originally planned, and I have today submitted in writing my request for the necessary procedure to commence.'
Dennis Canavan MP MSP, 20 th January 2000.

Cllr Dennis Goldie is aged 58 and an ex Provost of Falkirk. He beat lawyer and Labour activist Ian Smart by 59 votes to 23 in a selection ballot of Labour party members. He hopes to win back Falkirk West for Labour but was described in the Daily Record by a leading local Labour member, who asked not to be named, as a "car crash waiting to happen". In 2005, Cllr Goldie was criticised by the Standards Commission after he likened a fellow councillor to mass-murderer Harold Shipman. The Record also reported that in 2002 Goldie had shouted: "You're a Nazi!" at another councillor. The Sunday Herald revealed on March 6 th that Goldie had been reported again for allegedly shouting "you're a liar" at the local authority leader and "you're a disgrace" at the provost. They also revealed that, in 2000, Goldie backed the retention of anti-gay legislation in schools despite his party's support for repealing the discriminatory clause and that he refused to deny he was one of two unnamed Falkirk councillors whose homes were raided by police in 1995 following a controversial planning application. The Record reports that in the 1990s it emerged that Cllr Goldie had bought five former council houses to rent out despite having opposed the right to buy. The Labour MP for Falkirk, Major Eric Joyce said: "He'll be a good MSP."
