Irish referendum 22 nd May 1998 - the results

The referendum concerned the 'Good Friday' agreement which was signed on April 10 th 1998 in order to seek to resolve the relationships between Northern Ireland and Eire and pave the way for devolution in Northern Ireland. The 'Good Friday' agreement was signed by all parties with the exception of Rev Dr Ian Paisley's Democratic Unionist Party and Bob McCartney's United Kingdom Unionist Party who objected to the presence of Sinn Fein, the political wing of the IRA, in the talks preceeding the agreement.
