After Herald readers had telephoned at the rate of more than 1000 a day for a week, the final tally suggested a win for the Yes camp on the first question - whether there should be a parliament - by 72% to 28%. On the second question - whether the parliament should have tax-varying powers - the voting was almost the same, with 71% saying Yes and 29% No.
The survey has remained remarkably consistent since shortly after it opened and suggests that voters today will show scant interest in voting No to tax powers if they have already voted for the parliament itself.
After the lines closed at 4pm yesterday the total responses were:
Callers voting Yes-Yes 5196
Callers voting Yes-No 89
Callers voting No-No 2050
Callers voting No-Yes 46
TOTAL 7381
This produced Yes 5285 votes on the first question and 2096 for No. On the second question the voting was 5242 for Yes to tax-varying powers and 2139 for No.
Mr Harry Reid, Editor of The Herald, said last night: "The response shown by our readers has been remarkable and we are grateful to them all for showing such an interest. We launched the hotline as a means of inviting our readership to become involved in the referendum debate and they responded with huge interest."
