Tories berate 'inadequate' inquiry as Dixon is ignored

By Karen McVeigh in the Scotsman 22 nd August 1997

LABOUR rejected claims last night that its inquiry into Gordon McMaster's suicide was inadequate after it emerged one of the figures at the heart of the controversy was not interviewed.

The party's chief whip, Nick Brown, confirmed last night that he had not spoken to Lord Dixon, even though he was named in Mr McMaster's suicide note along with the Labour MP, Tommy Graham, who was suspended by the party earlier this week.

Mr Brown rejected Tory claims that his failure to speak with Lord Dixon - who is a former Labour deputy chief whip - proved the investigation of events in Renfrewshire was a "sham".

Last night Mr Brown said he had found no evidence to suggest Lord Dixon had anything to do with any form of whispering campaign.

"I knew [Lord Dixon's] opinion on the matter because I have transcripts of his radio interview on the subject and saw an interview he gave to a newspaper - I could not think of another question I could have asked Don Dixon.

" I'm absolutely clear that neither Don Dixon nor Tommy Graham played any part in Gordon's depression or his death. It's offensive to suggest otherwise."
