Candidates and Constituency Assessments

saltire shield'Iain Duncan Smith, the new Chingford skinhead, is the progeny of Norman Tebbit out of Baroness Thatcher. He is pro-hanging, pro-caning, pro-Section with a detestation that borders on the obsessional. David Davis calls himself, with unconscious irony, the 'clean break' candidate. Clean break from what? In addition to Europhobia, Davis is an English nationalist, a die-hard anti-devolutionist who wants to break up the UK by setting up an English parliament.'
Iain MacWhirter in the Herald, 20 th June 2001.

Chris Walker Chris Walker Con logo
Conservative & Unionist
Chris Walker, aged 43, brings a wealth of self-employed and corporate skills to the table. Educated in the Cumbrian hills at Sedbergh followed by an HND in Hotel Management at Blackpool College and then as a graduate trainee with Trusthouse Forte, he has worked all over the country and is very much a people person. He is self-employed since his mid-twenties in the hospitality trade and also writes fiction. As a recent candidate in the local elections for Dumfries & Galloway council, Chris Walker claims he was was "pipped to the post by the SNP". In reality, there was a tight three-way contest between Patsy Gilroy (Tory) with 994 votes, Jane Maitland (Ind) with 989 votes, and Thomas Jacques (SNP) with 924 votes. Walker came fourth with 701 votes and he was still 216 votes behind at stage 6, when he was excluded.
Chris Walker's recent business partnership has allowed him to follow a passion for politics. Sitting right of centre, he lists crime, education and immigration at the top of his agenda. Chris has a clear understanding of rural Scotland and is fully aware of the differences between city and rural life. Passionate about tourism and the creation of a year-round sustainable economy for the region, he sits on his local Community Council, Swimming Pool Board, Chamber of Trade and has held previous positions as Chairman of the Dumfries and Galloway Hoteliers Association, Chairman of the Wigtown District Tourism Committee and board member of Visit Scotland. Chris lives in the South of Scotland with his wife Sue, their 10-year-old daughter, Lisa and their two Labrador dogs.
