Candidates

The Scottish National Party is the only party who will contest all 59 Scottish constituencies, while Labour, the Tories, the Lib Dems and the SSP will each contest 58. Ex-Labour MP and now Speaker of the House of Commons, Michael Martin will not be opposed by the Tories or Lib Dems in Glasgow Northe East, while the SSP have stood down to support Ant- War campaigner Rose Gentle who is standing against Armed Forces Minister Adam Ingram in East Kilbridge, Strathaven & Leshmahagow.

The UK Independence Party have 22 candidates in Scotland, while the Scottish Green Party are contesting 20 seats. The Socialist Labour Party have 10 candidates while the religous fundamentalists Operation Christian Vote are also contesting 10 seats. The Free Scotland Party are contesting three seats, the BNP are contesting two seats. The Scottish Citizens Unity Party, who have an MSP at Holyrood, are contesting one seat, as are the old Liberal Party, the Scottish Independence Party, the Communist Party of Great Britain, the Scottish Unionist Party, Pensioners Party Scotland, Independent Green Voice and the Legalise Cannablis Alliance.

The Save the Scottish Regiments have stood down but they are supporting SNP, Lib Dem and Tory candidates against Labour. See their Don't Vote Labour campaign for more details.

New Scottish Constituencies

The profiles include the local government wards (and their electorate in 2001) which make up the 56 new constituencies and also the distribution of these wards in the 72 old seats. NB. Due to boundary changes for local government wards in 1999, some wards were split between different parliamentary constituencies at the 2001 Westminster election. I am indebted to Dr Aidan Thomson for providing ward breakdowns for the 2001 Westminster parliamentary constituencies.

Notional 2001 election results for the new Scottish Westminster constituencies were calculated by Martin Baxter http://www.electoralcalculus.co.uk/ and I am indebted to him for allowing me to reproduce his figures on this site. The notional results have also been calculated by Professor David Denver of Lancaster University for the BBC, ITN, PA News and Sky News. These figure are also reproduced here for comparison.

The figures are calculated using local government election results. In areas where all the parties did not contest the local elections calculations are difficult, while boundary changes in local government areas have further complicated the comparisons. While the two sets of calculations are largely in agreement, it should be noted that the figures are only an estimate of what would have happened had the 2001 election been fought on the new boundaries. A change in the politicial makeup of a constituency might have led electors to vote differently for tactical reasons.
