Tory Running a Tawdry and Deceitful Campaign

From the Scottish National Party, 7 th April 2006

SNP MSP John Swinney has criticised the Tory party for running a tawdry and deceitful campaign in the Moray by-election after people in Moray inundated the local paper with letters criticising the Tory candidate's mailshot to voters.

The Tory candidate has angered voters by portraying herself as a close associate of the late Margaret Ewing whilst omitting any mention in her literature that she is a Tory who voted against many of the issues Margaret fought for.

Mr Swinney said:

"Mrs Scanlon's literature in this by-election has been extremely tawdry and deceitful. Whilst I'm more than sure she and Margaret were friendly Parliamentary acquaintances, the impression she gives of being a close associate of Margaret, who is capable of taking forward Margaret's political legacy, is tawdry and deceitful.

"Margaret Ewing fought against the Tory Party, the selfishness the Tory Party represents and the numerous hammer blows the last Tory government imposed on the communities of Moray, in particular the fishing industry. It is distressing for those who respected Margaret's political work to have her work abused in this way.

"The fact that Mary Scanlon omits in her literature to tell people she is a Tory while she tries to deceive the electorate that she was a close associate of Margaret Ewing is a tactic of the political gutter.

"It is becoming clear to everyone that rather than serving the people of Moray Mary Scanlon is aiming to delude and deceive the voters of Moray.

"I call on the Tory Party to stop this deceit of the people of Moray."
