Profile from the Herald

Neil MacCormick: No 2 on the SNP list

The new MEP, who has been professor of public law at Edinburgh University since 1972, is one of Scotland's best-known academic lawyers.

A graduate of Glasgow, Balliol College, Oxford, and Edinburgh universities, he is an acknowledged legal expert on the European Union with many published works and has a working knowledge of several European languages.

He has argued strongly that Scotland would automatically remain a member of the EU if it became independent. The professor has honorary doctorates from universities in Canada, Germany, Italy, Sweden, and Scotland and is a regular TV and radio broadcaster.

He also concerns himself with human rights and constitutional affairs. Aged 58, he joined the Scottish National Party in 1967, is a former unsuccessful Westminster candidate for seats in Edinburgh and Argyll and Bute, and has held office within the party at local and national level.

Professor MacCormick is married and has three grown-up daughters.
