John Purvis: No 2 on the Scottish Tory Party list

The 1999 European Elections mark a return to Brussels for the man who served as MEP for Mid Scotland and Fife from 1979 to 1984 and during that time was appointed Group Whip and spokesman for energy research and technology.

He unsuccessfully contested the 1984 Euro elections. Aged 60, he was educated at St Andrews University and served in the Scots Guards from 1956-58. Later Mr Purvis worked for First National City Bank in London, New York, and Milan and between 1969 and 1973 was Treasurer of Noble Grossart.

Since 1973 he has owned a consulting business based in St Andrews specialising in European Business strategy, marketing and finance. From 1986-97 Mr Purvis CBE chaired the economic committee of the-then Scottish Conservative and Unionist Association.

He is also a former member of the Scottish Advisory Committee on Telecommunication.

Mr Purvis, who speaks Italian and French, also owns a farm in East Fife. He is married with three children.
