Mrs Attwooll stood for election in Glasgow Maryhill in 1974, 1979, 1983, 1987 and 1997. She has also made a bid for the Euro Parliament for Glasgow in 1979.
She is 56, and until last September she taught jurisprudence and comparative law at Glasgow University. Mrs Attwooll is the author of a book on Scotland's legal culture which draws comparison between Scottish and European law, basing her arguments on the auld alliance school of thought.
She serves on the Scottish Constitutional Convention and is committed to constitutional reform. She is also on the executive committee of the Scottish Liberal Democrats and is president of the Scottish women's Liberal Democrats.
Mrs Attwooll was educated at St Andrews University (Queens College, Dundee). She currently resides in Glasgow with her historian husband.
During the Euro election campaign, Mrs Attwooll pledged a reduction in junior doctors' working hours. She is the first Scottish Liberal Democrat in the European Parliament.
