The MEP for Glasgow since 1994, (he replaced the redoubtable Janey Buchan when she retired) now becomes one of the team of eight representing Scotland under the new PR system which treats the whole country as one constituency.
Aged 44, he comes from Kilmarnock and was educated at Paisley Technical College and Kingston Polytechnic. He was chairman of the Glasgow Labour Party between 1984 and 1987 as well as acting as an election agent and was assistant secretary of the Glasgow branch of Nalgo between 1980 and 1986.
Mr Miller is a chartered surveyor and became well known in the West of Scotland as the high-profile chairman of Strathclyde Region's Economic and Industrial Development Committee.
While in the European Parliament, he has served as Labour Party Whip, been a member of the Parliament's Economic, Monetary and Industrial Affairs Committee and a member of the delegation for ASEAN, South East Asia and Korea. He has one son and one daughter.
