Sir Alex Fletcher

'Literacy and numeracy in our schools fell to levels that would not be tolerated in the Third World and Scotland lost its once imperious reputation for world-class education. Thankfully, along came Alex Fletcher, the Tory MP for Edinburgh North, and in 1980 he gave parents the right to apply for schools outwith their catchment area.'
