 | 'Politicians in Scotland, English regions and Wales were promised direct trains to the Continent. It now appears that this was a sop to win their support for the legislation necessary to allow the Channel Tunnel to be built. The big fear was that the tunnel would give a huge shot in the arm to the economy of London and the south-east, leaving the rest of the United Kingdom at a serious disadvantage.
