There was a by-election for the Strathbogie ward of Aberdeenshire Council on the 13 th September 2001. Cllr Kate Carmichael resigned following the election of her husband as Lib Dem MP for Orkney & Shetland on the 7 th June 2001.
Strathbogie is in the Gordon Westminster parliamentary seat (held by Lib Dem Malcolm Bruce MP). Most of the ward is in the Gordon Scottish parliamentary seat (held by Lib Dem Nora Radcliffe MSP) while some is in the West Aberdeenshire & Kincardine Scottish parliamentary constituency (held by Lib Dem Mike Ribles MSP).
Conservative gain from Liberal Democrat. Swing: 13.5 % from Lib Dem to Tory.

A new councillor to represent the 2,500 voters in the Strathbogie Ward in Aberdeenshire was elected on Thursday, September 13, 2001, when Conservative Gerald Lumsden gained 359 votes, a majority of 79 over the Liberal Democrats in a 33% turnout. The result was: William Daly ( Labour ) 33; Moray Grant (SNP) 125; Gerald Lumsden(Conservative) 359; Lynn Millar( Liberal Democrat) 280; Jake Williams (Green) 21. The vacancy was caused by the resignation of Councillor Kathryn Carmichael ( Liberal Democrat), who moved to Orkney where her husband is an MP. At the last poll in Strathbogie in 1999 there were five candidates and Mrs Carmichael won with a majority of 24. The ward covers the Gartly, Rhynie, Lumsden, Kennethmont, Bridge of Alford and Keig areas.
