A by-election was held in the South Kintyre ward of Argyll & Bute Council on the 29 th November 2001 following the death of Cllr Archibald McCallum, a former Provost.

Argyll & Bute is in the Argyll & Bute Westminster parliamentary seat (held by Lib Dem Alan Reid MP) and in the Argyll & Bute Scottish parliamentary seat (held by Lib Dem George Lyon MSP).
