A by-election was held in Locardil on the 10 th August 2006 following the death of Independent Cllr Margaret MacLennan on 26 th May 2006.
Lochardil is in the Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch & Strathspey Westminster parliamentary seat (held by Lib Dem Daniel Alexander MP) and in the Inverness East, Nairn & Lochaber Scottish parliamentary seat (held by the Scottish National Party's Fergus Ewing MSP).
Lib Dem gain from Independent. Swing: 225.1 % Independent to Lib Dem.

The Highland Councillor for Lochardil, Inverness, Mrs Margaret MacLennan, has died suddenly aged 74.
Councillor MacLennan, a retired businesswoman, running a family butcher's business in the Market Arcade for many years, was found dead in her home on Friday.
Councillor MacLennan served on the former Inverness District Council between 1992-96 and on The Highland Council since 1996.
Her husband Tommy died last October. She leaves two sons, Tommy and Neil and a daughter, Susan.
Provost William Smith, Chairman of the City of Inverness and Area Committee of The Highland Council, will pay a tribute to Margaret before the start of the Area Committee tomorrow (Monday).
He said: "Margaret was a very hard working and conscientious councillor, who was very close to the community she served. She was a popular member of the Council and will be sorely missed by all who knew her. Our thoughts are with her family at this time."

A MINUTE'S silence was observed before yesterday's Inverness Area Committee meeting as a mark of respect for Highland councillor Margaret MacLennan who died at the weekend.
Provost Bill Smith paid a warm tribute to the member for Lochardil who died suddenly at her home on Friday.
The Provost said she was "very close" to the community she served.
Mrs MacLennan (74) was a retired businesswoman who had run the family butcher's business in the market arcade in Inverness.
Her husband Tommy died last October and she leaves two sons, Tommy and Neil and a daughter, Susan.
She was a member of Inverness District Council between 1992 and 1996 and had served continuously on Highland Council since 1996.
"She was a popular member of the council and a good attender of meetings and events and will be sorely missed by all who knew her, " the Provost added.
"Our thoughts are with her family at this time."
The funeral will take place at 1.30pm on Friday in St Stephen's Church, Southside Road, Inverness, and afterwards at Kilvean Cemetery.
Donations, for the Diabetic Association, will be collected at the service, with a request for family flowers only.
A by-election will be held on Thursday 10 August to fill the vacancy on The Highland Council for Ward 53 Lochardil, Inverness. If there is a contest, polling will take place between 8 am and 9 pm at Lochardil Primary School.
The by-election is being called as the result of the death of Independent Councillor Margaret MacLennan on Friday 26th May. Councillor MacLennan served on the former Inverness District Council between 1992-96 and continuously on The Highland Council from 1996 until her death.
The deadline for nominations is 4 pm on Tuesday 18 July. Prospective candidates can obtain nomination packs from Friday 30 June. Consent to nomination may be submitted earlier and candidaties should contact John Bruce, the CouncilÕs Elections Manager on 01349 868524 for more information.

The Liberal Democrats won a seat on Highland council at a by-election held in the Lochardil ward of Inverness following the death of Independent councillor Margaret MacLennan, 74. David Henderson won with a 251 majority.Labour finished fourth.
The by-election for Ward 53 (Lochardil, Inverness) on The Highland Council resulted in a victory for Mr David Henderson, Scottish Liberal Democrat. MrÊHenderson won with a majority of 251 votes over nearest candidate, Michael Gimson, Independent.
The turn out was 53.9 % with 1,172 votes cast.
The vacancy was created by the death of Councillor Margaret MacLennan, Independent.
The result was as follows:
Liberal Democrat won a landslide victory in the latest round of council byelections.
The party's candidate, David Henderson, took the Inverness Lochardil seat at Scotland's Highland Council. The Lib Dems had failed to fight the seat last time.
Turnout was relatively high for a byelection at 53.9%.
At Turkey Street in the north London borough of Enfield, the Conservatives won a very close victory over Labour, holding the seat by only three votes.
