Local Government By-elections 1995 - Summary

There were 5 local government by-elections in Scotland in 1995. Of these, only Lochee West (Dundee) was a true by-election.

Forth (South Lanarkshire) and Stevenston North (North Ayrshire) were held on the 1 st of June rather than on the 5 th of April following the death of candidates.

The Laurmont East election in Falkirk was re-run after the Labour candidate lost to the Conservative in April by one vote - two Labour ballot papers were disallowed because they had not been franked.

Southdean in the Borders was also declared invalid and rerun after the Liberal Democrat candidate lost to an Independent by only one vote - in this case there were 5 rejected votes of which 2 votes, both cast in favour of the Liberal/Democrat candidate, had not been franked.

The re-run elections of Laurmont East and Southdean are included in the comparison, even though they were not true by-elections. As the Forth and Stevenston North elections were merely postponed from April 5th, their results are not included in the table below.
