Welcoming the result, the SNP's Chief Executive Mr Michael Russell said:
'This is an excellent result for the Scottish National Party, and confirms the political progress that we are making in the Highlands and throughout Scotland.
'The fact that Labour - the only other mainstream party standing - came a poor and distant fourth illustrates their growing unpopularity as they retreat on the Scottish constitution.
'In the run-up to the General Election, the SNP are leading the debate in Scotland, winning the arguments, and gaining the votes of more and more Scots.'
