Invergordon (Highland) 27 th June 1996

Sandy MacKenzie won the Invergordon seat of the Highland Council for the Scottish National Party in a by-election on Thursday 27th June, taking it from an Independent. The Right Honourable Anthony Charles Lynton Blair's New Labour party come fourth in a seat they had earlier boasted they would win. The victory boosts the SNP group on Highland Council to 13 following a number of Independent and Labour defections. Invergordon is located in the Caithness, Sutherland & Easter Ross parliamentary constituency where SNP candidate Cllr Euan Harper has high hopes of wrestling the new seat from Liberal Robert Maclennan.

Welcoming the result, the SNP's Chief Executive Mr Michael Russell said:

'This is an excellent result for the Scottish National Party, and confirms the political progress that we are making in the Highlands and throughout Scotland.

'The fact that Labour - the only other mainstream party standing - came a poor and distant fourth illustrates their growing unpopularity as they retreat on the Scottish constitution.

'In the run-up to the General Election, the SNP are leading the debate in Scotland, winning the arguments, and gaining the votes of more and more Scots.'
