Local Byelections

saltire shield'I suggest that these plans are nothing to do with the interests of the people of Scotland and nothing to do with making local government more effective, but everything to do with creating Tory enclaves to increase the power of the Tory party in Scotland, if that is possible.'
Labour Lord Provost of Glasgow, Robert Innes, July 1993.

The SNP were very happy with the result of the second local by election in Scotland this year. Labour held onto the East Mains ward in South Lanarkshire with their majority over the SNP slashed from 45% to 30%. While the Labour vote dropped by 6%, the Nationalist vote surged from a 24% to 32.4% - almost exactly the percentage which they took nationally in the 1994 European Elections. An SNP insider commented 'Labour have been rumbled after 100 years of failing to deliver a Scottish Parliament. This result confirms that the SNP is enjoying its most successful period ever and we will be going into the next General Election campaigning for a resounding 'YES' for independence!'
