Local Byelections
 | 'As someone who got extremely cold all through January walking the streets of Eaglesham, I'd like to see our efforts publicised.'

Eaglesham (East Renfrewshire) 1 st February 1996
'No change!' was the message from the voters who braved the cold in the first Scottish local by-election of 1996 at Eaglesham in East Refrewshire. The seat was held by the Conservatives with a majority of 141, down from 146 in April 1995. The only major change since the last election was the presence of a Liberal Democrat who polled less than 8%. The percentage share of the vote for the three major parties decreased slightly - 3.5% less for the Conservatives, 2.8% less for Labour's William Wilde and 1.0 % less for the SNP's Elaine Mackenzie, who actually increased her vote, up by one to 422!
The by-election was unusual in that the percentage turnout increased by 2.4%, from an already high 53.7 % in 1995, to 56.1% in 1996.
