The Livingston constituency was created in 1983 with 58 % of it's voters coming from the old Midlothian Seat, and 42 % from the old West Lothian seat.
It included the regional wards of Livingston North, Livingston South, Broxburn, Calders and the district ward of Kirkliston.
The notional 1979 result was a Labour majority of 10,200.
