Labour was facing defeat in a poster battle at a crucial by-election

From the Scotsman 26 th September 2005

Council chiefs in Livingston upheld protests from Labour's political rivals and ordered the party to take down posters deemed to be too big.

Protests over the size and positioning of posters came from the UK Independence Party (UKIP) and the Liberal Democrats.

UKIP candidate Peter Adams said parties had been told that posters on lamp-posts should not exceed A3 size but "hundreds, possibly thousands" of Labour posters were over-size.

"It's about time the Labour party found out that size isn't everything," he said.

"But we are delighted West Lothian Council have said it's one rule for all."

The Liberal Democrats said: "The rule for posters are very clear and are designed to give all parties an equal opportunity.

"We are very pleased to see them being properly applied in Livingston."

A Labour spokesman said he was unaware the row, or of the council's move.

The Livingston by-election candidates are: Peter Adams (UKIP Scotland);

John Allman (Alliance For Change);

Melville Brown (Independent);

Angela Constance (Scottish National Party);

James Devine (Labour);

Charles Dundas (Liberal Democrat);

Brian Gardner (Socialist Party of Great Britain);

Gordon Lindhurst (Conservative);

Steven Nimmo (Scottish Socialist Party);

David Robertson (Green).
