saltire shield'When a government party is reduced to putting up posters of Mrs Thatcher's hair on the leader of the opposition's face this is a political message, but a political message which says 'to hell with the lot of you'.'

The General Election in pictures

The full results for the 2001 Westminster election are listed below. The 1997 result and 1992 notion results are also included for comparisons. The results are preliminary and have not yet been systematically checked. The Labour seats and vote, for example, does not agree with the tally given by the BBC, who appear to be unaware that the Speaker no longer a Labour MP. In particular the 'Independents' may be split in further analyses. In constituencies where there was a by-election, (Paisley South, Hamilton South, Glasgow Anniesland and Falkirk West) the % change is, as usual, calculated since the previous general election, and not since the by-election.
