'We should all use the European elections in June to send the clearest message possible to this government that it cannot continue holding the country to ransom in order to pay for the folly of the banks. Savings must be protected and encouraged. Public debt must be kept in bounds and inflation avoided if we don't want to end up like Iceland. And don't think it couldn't happen - the cost of insuring British sovereign debt is rising alarmingly. Time to open our eyes. It's only in the country of the blind that the one-eyed man is king.'
