Five seats changed hands at the 2005 Westminster election. The Scottish National Party won Na h-Eileanan An Iar (Western Isles) and made a notional gain of Dundee East from Labour. The Lib Dems made notional gains of East Dunbartonshire and Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch & Strathspey from Labour. The Tories made a notional gain of Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale & Tweeddale from Labour.

Retiring MPs

Fifteen Scottish MPs retired in 2005 compared to 19 in 2001, 10 in 1997, four in 1992, 11 in 1987, four in 1983 and 11 in 1979. However, this total included the Respect MP for Glasgow Kelvin, George Galloway who left Scottish politics to fight and win Berthnal Green in London from Labour. Fourteen other MPs retired from Westminster - thirteen Labour and one Liberal Democrats. George Foulkes, Martin O'Neill and Sir Archy Kirkwood are expected to be given peerages, while Helen Liddell is expected to be appointed British High Comissioner to Australia.
