The 2001 Westminster Election

saltire shield'I think a 55% turnout in a British General Election speaks volumes about the low respect that politicians are now held.'

The 2001 Westminster Election

Constituencies Changing Hands

Only two seats changed hands at the 2001 Westminster election. The Tories won back Galloway & Upper Nithsdale from the Scottish National Party with a majority of 74 votes. Renfrewshire West reverted to Labour, who had won the seat in 1997. The sitting MP, Tommy Graham, was expelled from the Labour Party, and sat as a Independent before retiring at the general election.
