11 of Scotland's 72 MPs - 10 Labour, and 1 Scottish National Party - retired at the 1987 General Election. MPs of the same party were returned in each constituency except for the Western Isles which was won by Labour from the SNP. NB the seat of Kirkcaldy was vacant at the general election following the death of Harry Gourlay.

Defeated MPs

60 of Scotland's 72 MPs stood for re-election in 1987. Of these, 47 were elected and 13 were defeated - 11 Conservatives, one Social Democratic Party and one Scottish National Party. Roy Jenkins resigned as Labour Home Secretary in 1976 to become President of the European Community. He was a founder of the SDP and after his defeat joined the House of Lords as Lord Jenkins of Hillhead. John Mackay became Lord Mackay of Ardbrecknish and was appointed Conservative deputy leader in House of Lords following the sacking of Lord Cranbourne by William Hague and the resignation of the entire Conservative front bench team in the Lords. Lord Fraser also entered the House of Lords as Lord Fraser of Carmyllie. The Right Honourable Michael Kerr, Earl of Ancram (son and heir to the 12 th Marquis of Lothian) has been MP for Devizes in Wiltshire since 1992. Gerry Malone was elected MP for Winchester in 1992 and was defeated by two votes in 1997.
