![]() | 'The Scottish Tory leader, David McLetchie, has turned out to be the surprise of the Scottish Parliament. He must be the first Tory leader in history with a gift for humility and self-deprecation, as he demonstrared at last week's state opening. He led an impressive election campaign for the Holyrood elections in May, and The Tories regained representation in Europe last month.' Iain MacWhirter in the Herald, 7 th July 1999. | ![]() |
Commenting on the success of the website, Scottish Tory Leader, David McLetchie MSP said:
'We knew that we had to fight in every way we knew possible to win this by-election. That is why we grasped the internet and turned it to our best advantage allowing voters the most direct access to what the Tories are doing and saying. The fact that we have had more than 21,000 hits shows that people like what we are saying and keep coming back to hear more.
'The Scottish Tories are leading the way in using new technology to make politics more relevant to voters, and in particular younger voters. It is clear that by taking our common sense policies direct to people's desk tops we can ensure that our message is heard loud and clear.
'Voters using our website have found it a useful tool and many have voted in our on-line opinion poll. Our first poll saw 85% of people saying that tuition fees should be abolished. In the second poll 73% of voters were aware that the costs for "Donald's Dome" had risen by more than £190 million to £230 million and 79% thought that the money would be better spent on more new teachers, nurses, police officers and improving our crumbling road network. In last week's poll 89.6% said that the Government should reinstate the planned Tory road building programme and immediately start working on the A77.
'Once again Labour have found themselves out of touch with the voters as they haven't even bothered to have a Scottish Party website. On Thursday I look forward to our first internet by-election victory.
