We'll clean the streets and beaches say Greens

From the Ayrshire Post

THE people of Ayr, Prestwick and Troon should have first claim on the streets.

That was the mesŠsage this week from Green candidate Gavin Corbett.
In their latest phase of the by-election campaign, the Greens have drawn attention to the "shocking" annual toll of 439 road casualties in South Ayrshire.
And the party mainŠtains that transport policy urgently needs to put people first.
Mr Corbett stressed that better transport was needed for the 54 per cent of citizens in the Ayr locality who did not have access to cars - including pensioners and the sick and disabled.
He said: "South Ayrshire Council has recently ended consultation on a transport plan for the area.
"The document contains a lot of good ideas but fails to put people at the heart of the policy.
"Unless we act urgently, we will see the traffic crisis which is choking our largest cities extend to towns like Ayr and Troon." "Stricter speed limits would be introduced in residential areas.
"I will give priority to getting lorries off our roads and I am keen to support the people of Troon in their battle on the harbour development as there are important principles at stake which extend to the whole constituency." Mr Corbett added: "In Ayr, my pledges include getting lorries off the streets and harbour freight onto rail, securing the future of farmers through the organic revolution and launching a "Fresh Ayr" campaign to clean up the streets and the beaches."
