Ayr by-election 2000

saltire shield'The Accounts Commission survey shows that SNP councils provide the highest quality services at the best value for money. SNP councils are all towards the top, with Labour councils propping up the bottom places. This is a boost for the SNP in the Ayr by-election, because it shows that the SNP deliver quality services and value for money, while Labour-controlled South Ayrshire Council is down at 25th out of Scotland's 32 local authorities.'

Tony Blair Not For Ayr - Labour Have Thrown In The Towel

A Press Release from the Scottish National Party

Commenting on the news emerging this evening [Monday 6 th March] that Tony Blair will not visit the Ayr by-election during his visit to Scotland this week, Scottish National Party Deputy Leader Mr John Swinney MSP said:

"Tony Blair is the son of Thatcher, and he has clearly gone 'frit', to use one of her expressions.

"Tony Blair campaigned in Hamilton - where the SNP wiped out Labour's majority - but has chickened out of the Ayr campaign.

"This is the clearest possible admission that Labour have thrown in the towel, and that Ayr is a two-horse race between the SNP and the Tories. Only the SNP can prevent a Tory victory in Ayr, with Labour heading for defeat.

"Tony Blair can run from Ayr, but he cannot hide from the verdict of the electorate."
