The Scottish Green Party has launched its campaign for the Ayr by-election by bike, but admits it is not in the running.
Candidate Gavin Corbett, who was joined by Green MSP Robin Harper, said the party would put basic green issues like safe food, warm homes, good transport and improvements to the local environment at the top of the election agenda.
The party is confident that voters will respond.
Mr Corbett said: "From Italy to Ireland people have been electing Green MPs and these MPs have been taking part in government.
"The Green movement is a breath of fresh air wherever it emerges.
"In Ayr my pledges include getting lorries off the streets and harbour freight onto rail, securing the future of farmers through the organic revolution and launching a Fresh Ayr campaign to clean up the streets and the beaches."
Robin Harper said: "Every day in the Scottish Parliament I see the politicians of the grey parties duck the issues that really matter for people, in favour of pointless squabbles.
"But, through the years, people have seen by-elections as a chance to reject traditional politicians and vote for something fresh and new.
"I know that thousands of people in Ayrshire already think green. I am urging them to vote Green as well."
