Nominations in for by-elections

Nominations have closed for three Westminster by-elections which are likely to be the biggest test of the voters' mood ahead of the general election.

Voting is at Preston Lancashire, West Bromwich West and Glasgow Anniesland.

The three contests are set to take place on 23 November. There will be a Scottish Parliament by-election at Anniesland on the same day.

The Anniesland and Preston contests were caused by the deaths of former Scottish First Minister Donald Dewar and Labour leftwinger Audrey Wise.

The West Bromwich West by-election stemmed from the resignation of former Speaker Betty Boothroyd.

Commons by-elections candidates are:

Glasgow Anniesland

John Robertson (Lab), Dorothy Luckhurst (C), Christopher McGinty (Lib Dem), Grant Thoms (Scottish National Party), William Lyden (Family Action Movement), Charlie McCarthy (Scottish Socialist Party).

Seven candidates already nominated for the Glasgow Anniesland Scottish Parliament by-election are: Bill Butler (Lab), Dr Kate Pickering (C), Judith Fryer (Lib Dem), Thomas Chalmers (SNP), Rosie Kane (SSP), Murdo Ritchie (Socialist Labour Party), Alastair Whitelaw (Green).

Mark Hendrick (Labour), Graham O'Hare (Conservative), Bill Chadwick (Liberal Democrat), Gregory Beaman (UK Independence Party), Terence Cartwright (Lancashire Socialist Alliance), David Franklin-Braid (Battle of Britain Christian Alliance Party), Peter Garrett (Preston Alliance - Christian Peoples Alliance), Christian Jackson (British National Party), Richard Merrick (Green Party).

West Bromwich West
